To Prevent Injuries a Tennis Warm-Up is Different
Warming up for a tennis match is different than for other sports, but still very important.
Loyola University Health System sports medicine physicians are dedicated to enhancing sports performance and getting people back in the game. Each season a LUHS sports medicine expert from our facility in Burr Ridge will offer tips to keep you safe and active. The first is Dr. Neeru Jayanthi, tennis medicine expert and director of LUHS’s Tennis Medicine Program, the first of its kind in the Midwest.
How to Warm-Up Before Your Tennis Match
Warming up for a tennis match is different than for other sports, but still very important. Static stretching before tennis does not reduce risk of injury and may have a negative effect on performance. A slow and gradual dynamic warm-up using tennis specific movements is most effective. Any static stretching should be done after playing.

In this video we demonstrate:
- dynamic warm-ups
- shadow swings
- service-line warm-ups
All are integral in preparing your body for the game. With the heat this might be a good week to play indoors.
