Burr Ridge Businessman Sentenced To Prison
His lawyer did not contest prosecutors' recommendation for a higher sentence.

BURR RIDGE, IL – A man who swindled $2.5 million from two hospitals and continued lying about it before his sentencing hearing was sentenced Monday to nearly five years in prison, federal prosecutors said.
Dennis Haggerty, 46, who lives on Hunter Court, was given 57 months for his fraud and ordered to pay $1.9 million in restitution, according to a U.S. Attorney's Office news release.
In November, prosecutors asked for a sentence of 46 to 57 months for Haggerty, which was even higher than their previous recommendation of 37 to 46 months.

The increase was a result of Haggerty's continued lying after pleading guilty and before his sentencing, prosecutors said. Patch documented the allegations of lying in a story last month.
In court documents, Haggerty's lawyer said the new recommendation was correct and did not contest the allegation of lying.

Earlier in the fall, prosecutors alleged Haggerty was making a seven-figure salary, despite the prosecution.
Prosecutors said Haggerty had paid back $550,000 of the stolen money.
In the spring, Haggerty pleaded guilty to fraud in selling personal protective equipment to Northwestern and University of Iowa hospitals. He did not deliver the products. This happened in the first weeks of the pandemic in 2020.
