BURR RIDGE, IL — Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso is holding out the possibility of phased reopenings of the economy, depending on the area of the state. He said Friday he is one of the suburban mayors who believe they are seeing positive trends that should allow their towns to reopen by the end of May.

"Just as the country is different from Maine to California, the state of Illinois is every different from Chicago to Carbondale — indeed, different from Chicago to Burr Ridge," Grasso said in his daily coronavirus bulletin. "Here's hoping science and medicine finds a path to support phased openings in areas of the state — just maybe with earlier openings outside of the city of Chicago."

Grasso noted Gov. J.B. Pritzker's order that people start wearing face masks when interacting with the public starting Friday. He requested residents start earlier than that.

He also said Burr Ridge resident Peter Gomopoulos donated 2,000 janitorial masks to the village Thursday. He said they would be available for residents starting Monday at Village Hall.

"Our patrol officers will have some of these masks to offer those they seen in public without a mask," Grasso said.

As of Sunday, Burr Ridge's number of coronavirus cases was 59, according to health authorities. The number of deaths by municipality is not released.

On Sunday, the state reported Harvester Place assisted living facility in Burr Ridge and Brookdale Burr Ridge nursing home had 37 and eight coronavirus cases, respectively. Harvester has seen nine deaths and Brookdale two deaths because of the virus.

Some of those cases at Harvester and Brookdale may not be in the overall Burr Ridge number because the state Department of Public Health says its count includes not only laboratory-confirmed cases, but also those that are medically and clinically linked.
