BURR RIDGE, IL – Burr Ridge opposes a proposed truck stop southwest of its boundary, saying it would hurt nearby residents and religious institutions, the mayor says.

In a letter last week to DuPage County officials, Mayor Gary Grasso said the village is against the county giving a permit for a QuikTrip convenience store and truck stop at 9200 S. Route 83, or Kingery Highway.

The business would be north of the strip mall where a mass shooting took place early Sunday morning.

The proposed truck stop is near single- and multi-family homes and four religious institutions, including a mosque with a preschool, Grasso said.

Last year, the mayor said, the village approved a Thorntons gas station directly across the road, in part, because it did not include a car wash and truck fueling pumps, which the proposed truck stop is said to include.

"Due to the size of the property and the proposed use, the Village is concerned that this land will be converted into long-term, overnight parking of semi-trucks in the future," Grasso wrote. "Semi-truck parking is highly out of character for this area and will be detrimental to the adjacent uses if developed."

The mayor also expressed concern about increased truck traffic at the nearby intersection of Route 83 and 91st Street.

"There are no deceleration or turn lanes proposed, which will (worsen) an intersection which is already dangerous, experiencing multiple fatal car accidents a year," Grasso said. "Eastbound traffic to the intersection is further exacerbated by the presence of a hill, which creates short sight lines leading to the traffic signal."

On Monday, the Village Board is set to vote on a resolution opposing the proposed development.

DuPage County has authority over the zoning of the property in question.
