Burr Ridge Torn Over Proposed I-294 Expansion
If the Illinois State Tollway adds an additional lane, Burr Ridge may profit, but residents may also face increased noise issues.

BURR RIDGE, IL — Burr Ridge officials and residents have mixed feelings about a proposed expansion to I-294 that would widen the tollway to five lanes. The Illinois State Tollway’s massive construction plan would include demolition of the Hinsdale Oasis, according to the Chicago Tribune. If these plans go forward, the oasis may or may not rebuilt, a question which leaves administrators and residents stuck weighing the pros and cons.
If the Hinsdale Oasis is rebuilt, Burr Ridge wants the tollway to meet some demands. First, as
Steve Stricker, Burr Ridge village administrator told the Chicago Tribune, they’d like the name changed to the Burr Ridge Oasis. Stricker also asserts that “revenue should go to the Village of Burr Ridge.” Currently, sales tax from restaurants at the Hinsdale Oasis yields the village $500,000 a year and that’s something Burr Ridge is reluctant to sacrifice.
There are also some serious drawbacks for Burr Ridge residents if I-294 is expanded. Some village officials believe eliminating the oasis would diminish noise coming idling semis on the entrance and exit ramps. Excessive noise was also among the chief concerns raised at a recent meeting of the Village Board, the Chicago Tribune reports. Burr Ridge locals also protest that widening the tollway will bring the noise and chaos of traffic ever closer to villagers’ homes and may even lead to residential property acquisitions.
