Cardiologist Haseeb Ilias Basha, MD, who specializes in treating patients with heart failure, has joined Loyola Medicine.

Cardiologist Haseeb Ilias Basha, MD, who specializes in treating patients with heart failure, has joined Loyola Medicine.

About seven million Americans have heart failure, which occurs when the heart cannot pump enough blood and oxygen to support other organs in the body.

Dr. Ilias Basha said lifestyle modifications, medications, pacemakers, stent placements and other treatments can slow or halt the progression of heart failure.

About 250,000 Americans have end-stage heart failure. At this stage, the only effective treatment is a heart transplant or an implanted heart pump called a left ventricular assist device (LVAD).

At Loyola, Dr. Ilias Basha works with a multi-disciplinary team that includes heart failure specialists, electrophysiologists, cardiac surgeons, infectious disease specialists, psychologists, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers and LVAD and heart transplant coordinators.

"Patients come to us to live longer and live better, and we have the tools to achieve these two goals," Dr. Ilias Basha said.

Dr. Ilias Basha earned a medical degree from Stanley Medical College in Chennai, India. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. He completed a fellowship in cardiology at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at Columbia University Medical Center.

Dr. Ilias Basha is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology and is board eligible in heart failure and transplant cardiology.

Dr. Ilias Basha is an assistant professor in Loyola's division of cardiology in the department of medicine. He sees patients at Loyola's Center for Heart & Vascular Medicine in Maywood.
