'Exhaustive' Willowbrook Shooting Inquiry Continues: Sheriff

The agency said openness with the public on the shooting is a "double-edged sword."

WILLOWBROOK, IL – The DuPage County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday it continues to investigate the "heinous" mass shooting in June in unincorporated Willowbrook.

One person, Reginald Meadows, 31, of Willowbrook, died in the attack, which occurred early in the morning June 18. Another 22 were reported injured.

Through the office's "exhaustive" investigation, deputies have interviewed many people and evidence is undergoing analysis, according to a news release.

"(T)he DuPage County Sheriff's Office has been working tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice ... for Reginald, for the injured, for those traumatized by the tragedy whether in attendance or not and for the entire community," the news release said.

The office said it aimed to attain the most complete understanding of what happened. And it said it intends to be fully open with the media and the public.

"Transparency, however, is a double-edged sword, and we must be careful to safeguard the integrity of our investigation," the office said.

So the office said it would share information when doing so would not jeopardize the safety of survivors or compromise the investigation.

"Any assertion made by anyone that information is being withheld for any other reasons at all is false," the office said in the release.

The shooting took place at the strip mall at the southwest corner of Route 83 and Honeysuckle Rose Lane, next to the Hinsdale Lake Terrace Apartments. It is across the road from the Burr Ridge village limit.

Authorities have said they are unsure how many shooters opened fire on the crowd, estimated by some to be around 300 people earlier in the night.
