Hinsdale Central Chess Team Places Fourth at IHSA State Chess Finals

Tyler Tompkins' seven-win performance on board three is the school's best.

Hinsdale Township High School District 86 congratulates the Hinsdale Central High School Chess Team for its fourth place finish at the IHSA State Chess Finals. This event is the largest scholastic chess tournament in the country, bringing in 146 teams from across the state.

Each team consists of eight boards, numbered one through eight. The lowest-numbered board scores the most points and the highest-numbered board scores fewer points. The team that scores more total points wins the match. There are seven rounds to the tournament, traditionally producing a single, seven-win team and six to eight, six-win teams. The six-win teams are then placed according to tie-breaks determined by the quality of wins and points scored.

The undefeated performance on Board 3 is the highest seven-win performance of a Hinsdale Central Chess Team player ever. The seniors have also continued the eight-year streak of conference championships and six-year streak of top seven performances at state intact.

Coaches Michael Jazak and Dylan Canavan said they are very proud of what the team was able to accomplish this year, offering special congratulations to seniors Trevor Huang and Doogie Warner on four excellent years and to Tyler Tompkins on an amazing individual performance. The team will head to nationals next month in Ohio and the coaches say they look forward to working toward a top-three finish at state next year.
