King-Bruwaert House keeps Spirit up amid COVID-19 threat

Positive actions making a difference for residents

In the most challenging of days and weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic, King-Bruwaert House in Burr Ridge has responded in positive ways to keep residents and staff safe, healthy, happy and connected.

“This is an unprecedented time in our history and each day we respond to the changes and recommendations suggested by local, state and national agencies and professionals,” said King-Bruwaert House CEO Terri Bowen. “What we have found to be especially gratifying are the wonderful ideas and approaches our staff members are taking to make life meaningful for our residents. We recognize their dedication and enthusiasm and are proud of their efforts that are making a difference.”

Life Enrichment Manager Leslie Brown and her staff have been working closely with Emily Neustadt of Social Services to organize regular FaceTime and Skype sessions with families and residents. Since King-Bruwaert House has restricted family and guest visitations, these personalized sessions give residents an opportunity to see and speak to their loved ones and friends. They look forward to regular meeting times that keep them updated.

With the closing of the in-house Beauty Salon, Life Enrichment staff assumed new duties to style residents’ hair for those who wanted a fresh look. Additional activities include one-on-one resident visits for games, puzzles, exercise/movement classes, arts and crafts, music and current event discussions. Movies shown on the big screen (but requiring social distancing) have also been popular.

“Staff members in all departments are really focusing on the residents and providing much-needed social interaction with them,” commented Neustadt. “This is creating a very positive environment for everyone.”

Well-known for preparing exceptional meals, the King-Bruwaert House Culinary Department has been attentive to quality entrees and the celebration of seasonal events. Decorations, dining options and tasty desserts highlighted Valentine’s Day, Fat Tuesday and St. Patrick’s Day. With Easter soon to arrive, plans are in the making for a fabulous dinner for all to enjoy.

Like the residents, staff benefits from support and cheerful thoughts. Lead receptionist, Monica Acevedo, has the daily task of updating staff on building news, service anniversaries and birthdays. Recently, she’s been adding uplifting messages to be encouraging. While most people looked over the arrival of spring, she made sure to remind everyone that the new season will hasten flowers and a fresh beginning.

Senior Director of Marketing, Development and Communications Andy Beltz has been spearheading a home-based team that oversees Admissions, Marketing, Sales and Development. Emails and text messages flow freely, keeping everyone connected to updates. Video conferencing capabilities give Marketing and Sales staff opportunities to discuss service and care level options, as well as relevant information with prospects. They also send and accept documents to expedite paperwork.

Marketing is also having some fun with a new Facebook and social media campaign to make King-Bruwaert House residents smile. With great enthusiasm, they launched an appeal for staff, family members and friends to send pictures, videos, children’s artwork, pet photos and quotations to: #MakeKBSeniorsSmile. The effort has been very well received and the response has generated plenty of smiles.

“We’re in uncharted territory now,” Beltz said, “but we are carrying on a great tradition of being poised and professional. Recently our CEO joined with three other continuing care communities to urgently request the availability of COVID-19 testing kits and personal protective equipment (PPE). We are doing everything possible to ensure the safety, health and well-being of our residents and staff. As an organization, we face each new day with creativity, courage and commitment.”
