
BURR RIDGE, IL — Memorial Day is America's day to honor servicemen and women who have given their lives for their country. For many, it's also the unofficial start of summer — but since it's a national holiday, it's important to keep in mind that schools and government offices will be closed on that day.

Open
Most businesses will be open, but it's not a bad idea to call ahead before heading out to a restaurant or shop. Some businesses will be offering discounts to veterans or active-duty military, so if you've served, bring your military ID with you.

Happening Memorial Day/Memorial Day weekend nearby
- Western Springs Memorial Day Parade: The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 28. The parade is presented by Western Springs VFW Post 10778.
- Hinsdale will also hold a Memorial Day parade, starting at 10 a.m. from Second and Washington Street. The American Legion will hold a Memorial Service on the front lawn of the Hinsdale Memorial Building at the end of the parade.

- Kids Ride Free on Metra All Summer Long: Up to three children age 11 and under will be able to ride free with each adult starting this Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
