MLB’s Top Prospects in 2014

There is not enough time in the day to highlight baseball’s top prospects for this year, so we’ll settle on two names who if you haven’t heard of before, you’ll be sure to know by October.

Byron Buxton, 20 year old outfielder and power hitter drafted by the Minnesota Twins. He was drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Twins in 2012 where he signed for a cool $6 million. Buxton was ranked the Twins’ #1 prospect after the 2013 season where he finished his Minor League Season with the Fort Meyers Miracle and a .326 batting average. The twin cities can expect this 6-2 right hander to clear the fences on more than one occasion this year.

Xander Bogaerts, 21 year old shortstop/third baseman drafted by the Boston Red Sox. Originally from the island of Aruba, off the coast of Venezuela, Bogaerts has made a smooth transition to playing for a big crowd in a big city. Since 2010, his organizational ranking with Boston has consistently improved from #14 to #2 and currently holds the #1 spot. A natural athlete and Boston’s best power hitter after the 2012 season, Bogaerts will be competing with Stephen Drew and others for the shortstop position after Derek Jeter retires at the end of this season. Stay tuned!

Local Talent

Sam Travis, an Orland Park, IL native, Providence Catholic High School Alumni, and Indiana University first baseman, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the 2014 MLB draft. Ranked 67th overall, Travis earned Big Ten Player of the Year at IU this season hitting 12 home runs, two triples and 16 doubles. He played on the Cape as a freshman and played for Team USA last year. Travis’ bat speed and smart hitting can bring him to the forefront in the MLB and shed light on the youth baseball scene in the Chicagoland area. Southsiders are already proud!
