Reckless Homicide Arrest In Crash Death Of Former Police Chief (patch.com) — Residents around Champaign are learning more about a deadly construction-zone crash on I-74 that killed retired Tilton police chief Steven Cornett of Danville. Illinois State Police say Tennessee driver Quamaine Fletcher admitted speeding through the Champaign-area work zone and reaching for his phone before veering into a parked construction vehicle, leading to his arrest on a reckless homicide charge.
2. Teen Schnucks shooting suspect pleads not guilty, requests jury trial (wcia.com) — A 16-year-old accused in the April shooting outside the Schnucks on Mattis Avenue in Champaign has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial. Prosecutors say the incident left an 18-year-old injured, and the teen also faces separate aggravated battery and robbery charges from an earlier case. A pre-trial conference is set for June 2.
3. CUPHD monitoring six travelers for Ebola after recent trips to Africa (wcia.com) — Six recent travelers from Champaign County are being routinely monitored for Ebola symptoms after returning from Central and East Africa, but health officials stress the risk to the public is low. The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District says this is standard CDC-guided precaution, with no U.S. Ebola cases reported and ongoing coordination with state and federal partners.
4. Arthouse 217 and Film-Fanatic.Club bring ‘The French Dispatch' to downtown Champaign (wixy.com) — A late-night screening of Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” is coming to The Literary Bookbar in downtown Champaign on Thursday, June 4, starting at 10:30 p.m. Hosted by Arthouse 217 and Film-Fanatic.Club, the event includes a curated intro, surprise short, post-film discussion, and themed late-night menu, all aimed at building Champaign-Urbana’s indie film community.
