1. Dedicated UI and community leader receives Athena Award (news-gazette.com) — A longtime Champaign resident and University of Illinois leader, Sarah Zehr Gantz, is being honored tonight at the Executive Club of Champaign County's Athena Leadership Awards banquet. Her two decades of work span campus roles, creating cuvolunteer.org, organizing major food-packaging service days, and serving on United Way and other local groups that connect volunteers and resources across Champaign-Urbana.
2. The Keep marks a new reign of house shows (dailyillini.com) — A new DIY venue called The Keep is stepping into Grandma's House's shoes, hosting charity-focused house shows for the Champaign-Urbana community. Run by University of Illinois students, the space emphasizes safety, inclusivity, and fundraising, with three more shows planned this semester on Oct. 2, Oct. 30, and Nov. 14.
3. Champaign Park District awarded with 70 new trees for Heritage Park (wcia.com) — Champaign residents will see 70 new trees added to Heritage Park thanks to ongoing support from the Lumpkin Family Foundation, which has funded more than $35,000 in plantings over four years. Park District natural areas staff say the new species will boost shade, wildlife habitat, and long-term air and water quality if the trees receive proper care.
4. Heartland guitar shop owner hands out 988 picks for Suicide Awareness Month (kfvs12.com) — A suicide-awareness effort started by a Herrin music shop now reaches musicians in Champaign, where free guitar picks printed with the 988 crisis lifeline are being handed out. The founder, moved by losing customers to suicide, has shipped thousands of picks to shops across North America to quietly put help within reach for struggling artists.
5. At least 13 people booked at a Champaign County facility on Sept. 18 (chambanasun.com) — Champaign County authorities booked at least 13 people into the county correctional center on Sept. 18 on a range of allegations, from aggravated battery and weapons offenses to DUI and retail theft. The list reflects charges at the time of booking only, and none of the individuals has been convicted based on these entries.
