(rsn.org) — A Champaign woman with a severe migraine says she was billed $410 by Carle Foundation Hospital's ER in Urbana after waiting four hours without receiving treatment, then seeking care elsewhere. Her experience highlights Carle's new policy of charging once triage begins, her insurer's refusal to cover the visit, and practical steps Champaign-area patients can take to question or appeal similar bills.
2. The man behind the name of UI's Townsend Hall (news-gazette.com) — If you've ever walked past Townsend Hall on the Illinois Street Residence Halls complex, this piece explains the influential math professor whose name it bears. Edgar J. Townsend helped build the University of Illinois' mathematics department into a national leader and spent decades shaping campus academics before retiring and later dying in Champaign County.
3. Regular gas at $4.29 per gallon in Champaign County in week ending Sept. 19 (chambanasun.com) — Drivers in Champaign and nearby towns are seeing regular gas as low as $4.29 per gallon at several Champaign County stations, with the countywide average at $4.66. Prices remain slightly below the Illinois average, influenced by global oil tensions and earlier refinery outages in Illinois and Indiana that tightened Midwest fuel supplies.
4. U of I committee works to prevent bird collisions on campus (wcia.com) — On the University of Illinois' Champaign campus, a committee is tackling the problem of birds crashing into large glass windows by adding special decals to buildings like the Business Instructional Facility. Organizers say the change has already stopped collisions this month and are urging residents to help by turning off unnecessary lights at night during migration season.
5. Illinois hoping to play to their strengths after loss to Ohio State (wandtv.com) — Illinois football's latest game has Champaign fans talking after the Illini put up big offensive numbers in a 42–19 loss at Ohio State, including 462 passing yards and 199 rushing.
