Champaign Police Investigating Fatal Accident That Occurred On February 28

The preliminary investigation, including eye-witness statements, indicates a pedestrian stumbled into the roadway and fell down.

On Feb. 28, 2020, at approximately 10:59 p.m., Champaign Police responded to the intersection of Kirby Avenue and Park Haven Drive for an accident involving a person in the roadway. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive 36-year-old male who had sustained traumatic injuries. Officers provided immediate medical assistance until paramedics arrived. The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The preliminary investigation, including eye-witness statements, indicates a pedestrian stumbled into the roadway and fell down. A short time later, while still on the ground, the male was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The vehicle initially left the scene of the accident; however, the driver arrived at the Champaign Police Department soon thereafter and was cooperative with the investigation.

At this time, no arrests have been made and no citations have been issued. The investigation into the accident remains ongoing and additional information may be provided as it becomes available.
