Spreading Some Light: Urbana Police Giving Vouchers For New Bulbs

Community leaders say the new program is a way for police to make contact with people and keep the community safe.

URBANA, IL — Urbana police and a local business want to make sure your car lights work while you're out on the road, so if an officer stops you, it might not be a bad thing. The Urbana Police Department wants to keep the community safe by handing out vouchers for any lights on your car that aren't working and need replaced, WCIA reported. If you're given a voucher due to needing your lights fixed, just take it to Advance Auto Parts on Vine Street where they'll change the bulb for free, thanks to the city, WCIA said.

In an effort to make contact with people and help take care of the community, officers got 15o vouchers to start handing out at the beginning of this month, and had around 100 left at the start of this week.

According to the news report, the city's communications-specialist, Preston James, said this new program started with $2,500 (from the Human Relations Caretaking Budget), because many people don't get their lights fixed because they think it costs a lot.

WCIA said according to James, the "successful program" is working, and after it's over, they'll study how it impacted the Urbana community in order to determine what they do in 2019.
