WILMINGTON, IL —The Will County State's Attorney's Office of Jim Glasgow asked for the denial of pretrial release for 33-year-old Dylan Schwartz, who faces seven felony domestic battery charges stemming from his arrest by Wilmington police. However, Will County Judge Donald DeWilkins ruled in favor of the Grundy County resident, granting Schwartz's release from the Will County Jail last week, court records reflect.

Court records indicate that Schwartz has been released from the Will County Jail on his own recognizance.

According to prosecutors, on Sept. 20, Wilmington police met with the 32-year-old victim, and she had swollen lips, cuts inside her mouth, swelling on the left side of her face and a bandage wrapped around her right knee covering a laceration.

She told police she was attacked that morning at her house in the 900 block of North Joliet Street, and she identified Schwartz as the person who hurt her.

She told Wilmington police she was supposed to go out for dinner with Schwartz on the evening of Sept. 19 and while she was taking a nap, Schwartz left her house and met up with a friend.

The next day, she became upset with the Braceville resident and notified Schwartz to come to her house and gather his belongings; when Schwartz returned to Wilmington, he threw trash all over her yard, court documents show.

Schwartz tackled her and punched her repeatedly in the face, ribs and stomach, prosecutors noted. Schwartz then started up a weed wacker, revving it up and clipping her calf with it, court documents show.

The victim ran into her house as Schwartz chased after her, pulling the screen off a window, shattering the glass everywhere, cutting the woman, prosecutors pointed out. Schwartz ran off, and the victim called her mother to get a ride to St. Joe's hospital in Joliet.

After being released from the hospital, the woman went to the Wilmington Police Department to file a report. According to prosecutors, Schwartz was out on bond for a 2023 misdemeanor charge of obstructing justice from Grundy County.

He also has a prior domestic battery conviction from 2019 in Grundy County and a prior domestic battery, that was amended to a battery conviction, from 2012 in Will County, court records note.

"Accordingly ... the people pray that this honorable court deny the defendant pretrial release," wrote Assistant Will County State's Attorney Laura Byrne.

According to court records, even though Schwartz is charged with a detention-eligible offense, the judge denied the prosecution's petition to detain. Schwartz was freed from the Will County Jail at 6:34 p.m. on Sept. 28 and ordered to appear in Courtroom 405 on Oct. 12 at 9 a.m.

Judge DeWilkins ordered the Braceville man to have no contact with the Wilmington victim or her house on North Joliet Street. Schwartz was also placed on electronic monitoring as one of the conditions of his pretrial release.
