MORRIS, IL — Friday afternoon's building fire in Morris was spotted by a passing Grundy County Sheriff's deputy. The deputy later needed to be treated at the Morris Hospital for smoke inhalation, though he and one of the occupants of the building should recover, the Morris Police Department shared out on Facebook.

According to the police department, a deputy on routine patrol around 2 p.m. saw smoke coming from behind a house in the 1000 block of Armstrong Street as a person ran from a nearby building and advised that the pole born was on fire and two people were still inside, one being a paraplegic. The sheriff's deputy later broke down the door and he rushed inside along with the other person. Two people inside at the time did not even know the fire was happening, the police department noted.

One person made it out safely and the deputy and the other person managed to move the paraplegic to the door despite worsening conditions and zero visibility due to the smoke.

The deputy and the person helping him were both taken to Morris Hospital for smoke inhalation and both should fully recover, the police announced. One dog escaped the fire, but a second dog died from the fire.
