SHOREWOOD, IL — Kurt Liebermann Sr., a 67-year-old Channahon resident, spent part of his weekend inside the Will County jail after he wrecked his vehicle during the late-night hours traveling the rural stretch of South River Road, south of Shorewood. Will County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Elizabeth Matthews told Joliet Patch that Liebermann was arrested on felony charges of aggravated DUI and that this marks his third DUI offense.
According to her agency, at around 1 a.m. on Saturday, deputies with the Will County Sheriff’s Office were summoned to the 21000 block of South River Road in Troy Township for a welfare check due to a crash alert.
When deputies arrived on the scene of the single-car crash, the driver, 67-year-old Kurt Liebermann Sr., was on the scene and about 150 yards from his crashed Camaro, Matthews said.
Deputies saw skid marks leading off the roadway, leading deputies to believe Liebermann was traveling southbound on South River Road when his car went off the roadway and came to rest near a driveway, she added.
An ambulance was called out for Liebermann, but he refused treatment on the scene.
According to Matthews, the sheriff's deputies noticed Liebermann’s eyes to be bloodshot and an odor of an alcoholic-based beverage emanating from his breath as he spoke. He also admitted to taking his prescription pills and having a few alcoholic beverages that same evening.
The Will County Sheriff's noted that Liebermann has prior DUIs from August 11, 2004 from neighboring Grundy County and on May 14, 2005 out of Will County.
Liebermann was let out of the Will County Jail over the weekend. Will County said Liebermann was charged with aggravated DUI-3rd offense, DUI-Alcohol, DUI-BAC .08 Or More, DUI-Drug, DUI-Combination Of Alcohol/Drugs and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He will be back in court at 9 a.m. June 16 in Courtroom 202 in Will County.
Joliet Patch produced numerous stories in his years about his son, also named Kurt Liebermann, who is no longer employed by the Channahon Fire District Protection after facing multiple arrests involving drinking and driving in Channahon and Plainfield respectively.
Last October, Patch ran a story headlined, "Channahon Firefighter-Paramedic Kurt Liebermann Pleads Guilty, Learns Sentence For Back-to-Back DUIs."
The article noted that more than two-and-a-half years after long-time Channahon firefighter-paramedic Kurt Liebermann was arrested on back-to-back DUI crimes within a three-week period, first in Channahon, then in Plainfield, he resolved both cases at the Will County Courthouse with guilty pleas.
Will County Judge Jessica Colon-Sayre sentenced the 39-year-old Channahon man to 24 months of court probation for the Channahon case. He pleaded guilty in the Plainfield case three weeks later. According to sentencing records, the younger Liebermann was given 180 days in the Will County Jail, but was credited for 90 days of time already served, even though he actually never served any time inside the Will County Jail for either DUI arrest.
