Aux Sable Cemetery's Rich History Often Overshadowed by Reputation
Settler's garden cemetery is rich in history and is the resting place for ancestors of well-known families.
Aux Sable Cemetery in Minooka has fallen prey to vandals, been the rumored location to the gates of hell and is haunted, according to local lore. Because of this, the cemetery, off Brown Road, has open and close hours and is heavily trafficked by police.
The first grave was dug in 1835, when the wife of Joshua Ridgway passed away. What speaks most at this cemetery today, though, are the names on the gravestones, names of families that arrived first and many whose descendents still live in Will, Grundy or Kendall Counties.
