Channahon Police Department Needs 2 More Patrol Officers

Channahon Chief Jeff Wold said he fully expects to have the two police openings filled by the year's end.

CHANNAHON, IL - This growing village of 13,000 with a low rate of crime needs to hire two additional full-time police officers. Channahon's police department is authorized for 23 sworn officers. Police Chief Jeff Wold said his agency has been at 21 officers in recent months, requiring some officers to pull overtime to cover their village's regular patrol shifts.

The pair of vacancies came after one officer left for St. Charles and the other officer was in training and chose to resign during the probationary period of employment, the chief said. Channahon intends to start accepting applications for its two police openings in about a week. "Hopefully, by the end of the year, we'd have our new officers on the street," Wold told Patch during a sit down interview Monday at the department.

Channahon prefers to hire someone with previous experience as a police officer and state certification as a police officer. "We would like someone with at least two years of experience," Wold added.

Ordinarily, a rookie officer in Channahon makes about $55,900 in starting base salary. However, Wold estimates that the base pay will be around $58,000 to $61,000, provided that Channahon hires two applicants with at least a couple of years police experience.

"Obviously, if they want to be on a SWAT team or a drug task force, Channahon probably is not the place for them," Wold said. "We don't have much criminal activity in town. There are a lot of business checks and community policing, if that appeals to you.

"I think Channahon is a great police department. Our officers are well-trained, and I think that would be attractive to an officer who has experience but may not have opportunities for a lot of training."
