CHANNAHON, IL — Nicole Petropulos, a 48-year-old Channahon resident, must maintain "absolute sobriety of alcohol" following this week's arrest by the Channahon police following allegations she used a folding chair to strike a man inside their home 10 times, leaving him bloodied and needing hospitalization, according to court files.

On Thursday afternoon, Will County Judge James B. Harvey, who often rules against Joliet area defendants accused of violent crimes, rejected the Will County State's Attorney's petition to deny pretrial release for Petropulos, who is charged with two counts of domestic battery and one crime of interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

Petropulos was kept in the Will County Jail from 2:18 a.m. Wednesday until 5:45 p.m. Thursday, jail logs show.

According to the prosecution's petition, following the Chicago White Sox victory over the Houston Astros, the Channahon police were called around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday to Petropulos' house in the 22600 block of South Donna Avenue for a domestic battery.

The 911 dispatchers advised that the mother had attacked the father as both children were present during the attack, and a neighbor responded to the house and was restraining Petropulos until Channahon police arrived on the scene, court files indicate.

According to prosecutors, the officers spoke with a teenager and one of the neighbors in the driveway. From there, the officers entered through the garage and saw the man lying on his right side along the floor.

The victim told Channahon police that Petropulos struck him with the chair approximately 10 times. He "stated that he could not feel his left arm and was experiencing head and neck pain. Officers photographed the folding chair that had blood on it," court files show. The victim told officers he had eight alcoholic beverages and was sitting in his chair watching the Chicago White Sox game when the incident happened and "that the incident was unprovoked," court files show.

The neighbor told the officers from Channahon that the victim called him after the attack began, and that prompted him to walk over to the house to keep both parents separated, officials said.

Prosecutors said the victim's children tried to call 911 numerous times, but Petropulos tried multiple times to get the 911 call to hang up. The children kept calling because they were fearful of the extent of the man's injuries, according to court files.

Upon their initial arrival in the neighborhood, Channahon police said they spotted Petropulos watching them from an upstairs window, and when they shined a flashlight at the window, she moved away from it. Once the victim was loaded into an ambulance, the "defendant eventually came to the front door but refused to open it. Officers asked Defendant multiple times to open the door, but she refused," prosecutors told Judge James Harvey on Thursday.

Ultimately, Petropulos was arrested and taken away in handcuffs. At the police station, she "stated that she had been binge drinking and consumed at least 6 beers prior to the incident. Defendant stated (the victim) was making her angry and that she 'snapped,'" prosecutors outlined. "She was crying and laughing during the booking process. When Defendant was informed that (the man) was in the hospital, she began laughing. Defendant was concerned about the well-being of her dogs," prosecutors said.

Joliet Patch has reached out to Channahon police to find out whether the victim remains hospitalized. This story will be updated once those details are known. As for Petropulos, she remains free and must return to the Will County Courthouse on Oct. 29. She's assigned to Courtroom 801.
