Life Lessons Learned From Martial Arts

The martial arts offer more than self-defense and physical fitness– they can teach us about life, and ourselves.

The martial arts offer more than self-defense and physical fitness– they can teach us about life, and ourselves. Whether you are a veteran or brand new to the practice, there are important life lessons that can be applied to life outside the dojo.

Learning these lessons won’t just make you a better competitor, they will provide experience and set you up for success in other endeavors as well.

Invest in Technique – Bruce Lee said “I fear not the man who practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Being calm, smart and technical can get you further in life than brute force. If you want to improve at anything, study the details.

Pushing Your Limits – Your body can continue longer and better than your mind would have you believe. Many physical challenges can be more of a mental game than anything else. Know your limits and keep working to surpass them.

Learn From Others – Everyone you meet has the ability to show you something new. There is something they’ve spent their life doing, or are passionate about, you can learn from. Pay attention to others’ strengths and techniques, and you can improve. No matter how good you are at something, there is always room for improvement- recognizing where to improve is often be learned from others.

You Only Get One Body – Maybe you aren’t interested in maintaining the perfect body with bulging biceps and indestructible abs. However, martial arts requires mental sharpness and stamina- eating right, and getting certain levels of physical exercise will improve your mental health and make you feel better throughout the course of the day.

The Physical Cost to Success – Whatever you want in life has a cost associated with it. Martial arts has a physical risk involved. You may have tight or sore muscles for a few days after a workout. You may (will) fall down a few times. If you want something bad enough, soreness will be a small or insignificant cost.

Stay Determined – It’s important to set goals, and always be working towards them. The path won’t always be easy. But when you’ve faced difficulties before, you become increasingly aware of what it takes to succeed. Martial arts can give you the traits necessary to become a leader.

The martial arts offer a great foundation for success. The life lessons learned in the dojo make us more well-rounded people. Do you want to see what the martial arts can do for you?  Call TM Martial Arts today (815) 254-6141 or visit www.tmmartialarts.com to learn more.
