Channahon District 17 decides against further study for now.

Channahon School District 17 board members decided against further investigation into school dress code after 62 percent of parents said they were confident with the existing dress code.

"We actually just started discussing springtime of last year," Dr. Karin Evans, superintendent said. "The reason for us to take a look at it doesn't have anything to do with behavior problems or students interacting with one another because of dress."

Instead, Evans said, the district re-evaluated its dress code because surrounding districts were doing so. In neighboring Troy Community Consolidated District 30-C, the dress code was made more stringent for students beginning in August of this year.

The existing Channahon dress code says that torsos and shoulders must be covered and skirts must not be more than two inches above the knee.

School board members also wanted to evaluate whether a stringent dress code - like khaki pants and blue shirts - would be a less expensive way to clothe students. Parent gave a resounding no.
