Obituary: Robert L. Arko

Robert proudly served in the U.S. Navy, dedicated 37 years to United Airlines, and found his greatest happiness by his wife's side.

Obituary was published and funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home and Crematory​.

Robert L. Arko

Robert L. Arko, age 82, of Joliet, passed away peacefully, Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Edward Hospital in Naperville, with his wife by his side. Born August 5, 1944 in Calumet, MI, he was one of 10 children of the late George and Albertha (nee Mills) Arko.Robert served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1966.

Robert retired from United Airlines after 37 dedicated years of service as a ramp serviceman. An avid reader and die-hard Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, he also enjoyed spending his free time visiting the casino, going out to lunch, and attending plays. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his beloved wife, always the happiest by her side and sharing life’s everyday moments together. He was a man of extraordinary patience and kindness, and to his wife he was not only her partner in life but the very best husband she could have asked for. His gentle spirit, loving heart, and unwavering devotion to her will be treasured always.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Gayle; brother, Edwin (Betty) Arko of Aurora; sisters, Angeline Soper and Suzanne Doty both of Wheaton; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond, Bernie, George, Peter, James, and Paul.

A Memorial Gathering for Robert L. Arko will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 40 Houbolt Rd, Joliet, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of his Memorial Services at 11:00 a.m.

Per his request, cremation rites have been accorded. Arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, Joliet, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church.
