Two local, inspiring sisters from Teddy Bear Care, delivered several teddy bears and other stuffed animals to the Foundation Office at Silver Cross Hospital to comfort sick children. Magnolia and Lily Powell dropped off the comforting stuffed toys to the hospital on March 6.
Magnolia and Lily Powell created the Teddy Bear Care program last fall, in honor of their grandmothers who provided inspiration and guidance to begin donating the plush toys to sick children. The girls remember the heartfelt moments when their grandmother “Jo-Jo”, who had cancer, would become so filled with joy when loved ones gave her a little gift. They decided to put these warm thoughts to good use. So with the help from their other grandmother, Ethyl, the girls presented at their church, Resurrection Lutheran Church, and began receiving donated toys from the congregation that they in turn donate to area hospitals.

“My grandmothers inspired us to help kids in hospitals,” said Magnolia Powell, who is a seventh grader at Channahon Jr. High School. “We hope our efforts will give sick children some joy as they sleep with them or hold onto them during surgery.”

Her sister Lily adds, “We wanted to do something so kids can feel good when they’re in a hospital and don’t have their parents around them,” said the third grader at Pioneer Path Elementary School in Channahon.
“We are grateful to Magnolia and Lily Powell and their Teddy Bear Care program for their support for our youngest patients,” said Larry Johnson, Vice President of the Foundation at Silver Cross Hospital. “The donation of cuddly animals will make a difficult visit to the hospital a little easier.”
About Pediatric Services at the Silver Cross Hospital
Silver Cross is certified by the Illinois Department of Public Health with having an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics. This recognition formally identifies Silver Cross as a hospital that provides the necessary resources and capabilities to address the emergency needs of critically ill and injured children. In addition, Silver Cross Hospital continues to partner with Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago for 24/7 pediatrician coverage to care for patients in the Pediatric Unit. These board-certified Lurie Children's Hospital pediatric specialists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at Silver Cross to help children of all ages including newborns. These specialists work in partnership with a child's regular pediatrician to provide the best possible care.
The pediatric unit located on the 4th floor of Silver Cross Hospital is licensed for 8 beds. Each large private, patient room has been designed to be acuity-adaptable, which means that the space, supplies and staff are available in the room to deliver the appropriate level of care to the patient rather than transfer the patient between units as needs change. And, procedures can be performed at the bedside. In addition, each pediatric room includes wireless internet, 30” flat screen TV system, and family-friendly décor with decorative colored lighting that can be controlled by the patient. There is also a comfortable sleeper sofa so parents can stay around the clock to support their child and be involved in the plan of care. A multi-purpose room is also available for education and family time. The unit includes two pediatric high visibility rooms that are located directly across from the nurse’s station. The rooms have a video-monitoring feature for safety, especially when the parents are unable to be at the bedside and multiple sets of secured doors in conjunction with a security system for infant/child protection.
