Revive at the Rock Run Rookery

Check out the newest nature preserve.

A rookery is a place where flocks of birds congregate to breed and live.

The Rock Run Rookery is newest addition to the arjea’s network of Forest Preserves, and a great place to get back in touch with nature.

The preserve was acquired in 2002 to protect nesting islands for herons, egrets, and other bird species native to the area.

Things to be enjoyed at the Rookery include fishing, boating (trolling motors only), biking, hiking and viewing of various forms of indigenous wildlife.

Additional features include a footbridge, boat launch and a shade structure overlooking the lake.

Located at the area where the Des Plaines River and the Rock Run Creek meet,
the preserve has two converted quarry lakes with a protected section where the birds can gather while coexisting with the humans who enjoy the area as well.

The rookery is on Youngs Road and Route 6 in Joliet, and is only a stone’s throw away from Channahon.
