Strip Mall Gospel

New church sets up in Channahon Plaza

There’s a new church in town, and it’s set up, of all places, in a strip mall. What do church leaders see in a store front site for their church? Accessibility and ease, for now.

“We wanted to be accessible,” said Pastor Nancy Shannon, of the Family Harvest Church West at 24463 Route 6 in Channahon. “We just prayed a lot and went out there and started searching when we saw the 'for lease' sign.”

It’s right next door to the Rosati's Pizza, too, for those who want to grab a slice after services.

The small branch of the mega-church Family Harvest in Tinley Park is hoping to make it easier for its more western members to attend Wednesday night services at 7:15 p.m.

It’s also reaching out a hand to potential new members and is offering Wednesday morning vacation Bible school through August 3.

“We are broadening our horizons. . . The Bible says to go out in the world and minister to people,” Shannon said. “We just wanted to go out there and start loving on the people."

The church's focus is to love people and to teach people how to practically apply the Bible to every day life, she said.

Shannon said everyone is invited out to the Wednesday evening services and all kids ages 4 to 9 are welcome to come to Summer Boot Camp Wednesday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon through August 3.

There are crafts, games, water balloons on hot days, treats, and of course, lessons on the word of God.

Family Harvest Church is a non-denominational Christian church, Shannon said, that believes in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. They also believe in baptism and speaking in tongues.

“Jesus told his disciples not to go out until you receive the power of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues,” Shannon said.

The Channahon branch is not currently offering Sunday morning services. Those interested can go to the main church. They’re just creating one more option for those who are interested in extending their faith, learning about God for the first time, or just want a fun, safe place for their kids to hang out on a weekday morning.
