Two Troy Middle School students placed at the recent Special Olympics State Basketball Skills competition, held at the Horton Field House at Illinois State University.

Lillian took 4th place, and Michael took 6th.

Troy Director of Athletics and Activities Meagan DeGroot said the competition involved such skills events as dribbling, shooting and passing.

“Both Lillian and Michael did an outstanding job in their divisions,” DeGroot said.

Coaches are Rachel Violetto, Lukas Van Eck and Katie Lewis.

“Lilly and Michael had a great season,” Violetto said. “They worked hard from November through March. Both of them won gold medals at regionals and qualified for the state competition at ISU. Michael showed huge improvement with shooting, while Lilly shocked us all with how quick she was with dribbling. We are so proud of both of them and of all of their accomplishments this season.”

Lewis said the team had an amazing season.

“I was so proud of our athletes for advancing to the state competition and all of their hard work throughout the season,” she said. “Michael showed great improvement in the shooting portion of the competition throughout the season, and Lillian showed great improvement on the dribbling portion of the competition, which she had challenged herself on.”

Troy Middle School is a Troy Community School District 30-C school.
