1 Dead, Man And Boy Wounded In Shooting At Uptown Starbucks

A 12-year-old boy was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, police said.

CHICAGO, IL — A gunman opened fire in a Starbucks in Uptown Thursday night, killing a man and wounding two others—including a 12-year-old boy, police said. The boy was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital in critical condition, authorities said. The shooting happened at about 8:15 p.m. in the 4700 block of North Broadway Street.

Police said the shooting was likely a result of a drug deal between the shooter and the man who was killed. The shooter—who wore a mask—followed the man into the Starbucks and fired on the man, the boy and one other person, police said.

The man who died was confirmed as 28-year-old Sauvignon Watkins of the Chatham neighborhood. Police said Watkins and the other shooting victim knew each other, but the boy had no connection to the incident.
