10 Chicago Teachers Named Golden Apple Award Finalists
The finalists were among 34 selected from the city and surrounding suburbs.

CHICAGO, IL — Ten teachers from Chicago schools have been named finalists for the 2017 Golden Apple Awards, an honor that recognizes "outstanding teachers for their role in building a stronger, better-educated society," according to a release by the nonprofit education group.
Chicago's finalists were part of a list of 34 teachers from around the area who were chosen from more than 600 nominations of fourth- to eighth-grade educators. For the final round, finalists will be reviewed in their classrooms before the 10 award winners are selected in the spring by a committee of college and university professors, educational consultants, school administrators and former award winners.

The 10 award winners each receive a tuition-free, spring quarter sabbatical to study at Northwestern University, as well as $5,000 in cash.
"Golden Apple has championed for decades the belief that superior teaching quality directly improves every child’s educational experience,” Golden Apple CEO Dominic Belmonte said in a statement. “These finalists are shining examples of the transformative power excellence in teaching plays in improving students’ lives."
Along with the finalists for the teachers award, five Chicago principals and administrators were named finalists for the Stanley C. Golder Leadership Award Finalists:
- Christopher Brake, Norman Bridge Elementary
- Phyllis Cavallone-Jurek, St. Therese Chinese Catholic School
- Rigo Hernandez, Josiah L. Pickard Elementary School
- Ethan Netterstrom, Skinner North Classical Elementary School
- Docilla Pollard, Andrew Carnegie Elementary School
Named after a founding Golden Apple board member, the award honors principals or school heads at one or more schools for at least five school years.
