COOK COUNTY, IL — A child died after being ejected from a vehicle due to a crash on Interstate 55 in the early morning hours Sunday, according to police.

A driver lost control of a vehicle shortly after 3 a.m., causing a rollover on the northbound interstate at Harlem Avenue near the borders of Summit, Chicago and Forest View, state police said. A 12-year-old passenger was ejected, taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, according to police.

The girl was identified as Jennifer Lopez of Gage Park.

All northbound lanes were closed during the crash investigation, with traffic rerouted at Harlem Avenue, police said.

Police said the 39-year-old driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, WGN reported. Other occupants of the vehicle were a 32-year-old woman and children, ages 4, 6 and 13.
