2.9 Magnitude Earthquake Recorded 13 Miles Off IL Shoreline In Lake Michigan

EVANSTON, IL—A 2.9 magnitude earthquake has been reported about 13 miles off the Evanston shoreline in Lake Michigan, United States Geological Survey officials said.

The earthquake was recorded at 2:39 p.m. Wednesday. The quake occurred 3.1 miles deep below the lake’s surface.

The epicenter was placed off the North Shore communities of Kenilworth, Wilmette, Winnetka and Evanston. The minor earthquake could be felt all the way to Madison, Wis., about 114 miles from Chicago.
