3 Chicago Hospitals Earn Straight A's for Safety From Watchdog Group

Four other hospitals received A's from the organization. Find out which facilities made the grade.

CHICAGO, IL — Three Chicago hospitals earned straight A's from an independent nonprofit watchdog group that examines medical safety. Four city hospitals also received A grades from the organization, which released its ratings Monday.

The Leapfrog Group, in cooperation with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, graded more than 2,500 hospitals across the United States, evaluating them on 30 different safety criteria. Of the facilities graded, 72 U.S. hospitals received straight A's.

The Chicago hospitals receiving straight A's were:

  • Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center
  • Rush University Medical Center
  • University of Chicago Medical Center

Hospitals that earned A grades included:

  • Elizabeth Medical Center
  • Presence Resurrection Medical Center
  • Presence Saints Mary
  • Saint Anthony Hospital

This is the 10th consecutive straight-A rating for the U of C Medical Center.

Four Chicago hospitals earned D’s for safety. They included:

  • Loretto Hospital
  • Mercy Hospital and Medical Center Chicago
  • Roseland Community Hospital
  • University of Illinois Hospital

Roseland Community, University of Illinois and Mercy received C's in the spring of 2016, the previous marking period. Loretto had earned an A during that period.
