3 Hospitalized After Suspicious Package Found In Loop

A hazardous materials team responded to the building, fire officials said.

CHICAGO, IL — Three people were taken to area hospitals Thursday morning after a suspicious package was found in an office building in the Loop, fire officials said. The package created a foul odor and several others reported feeling sick, authorities said. The Chicago Fire Department was called to the office building at 131 S. Dearborn Street around 9:15 a.m.

Police SWAT teams also responded to investigate the package, which had been opened by someone in the building, fire officials said. The package was in the mail room of a government immigration office on the third floor. Chase Bank is also located in the building.

At least 17 people in the building declined medical treatment, authorities said.

Authorities have not disclosed what substance was in the package, however ABC News reported that the envelope caught fire.

The fire department said the hazmat situation was "secured" by around 10:50 a.m.
