Cook County Jail Fight: 5 Super-Max Inmates Hurt

UPDATED: No jail staffers were hurt in the Friday afternoon brawl. The injured were taken to area hospitals.

CHICAGO, IL — Five inmates in Cook County Jail's super-max section were hurt and hospitalized in a fight at the facility Friday, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

The brawl erupted at about 1:30 p.m. in Division 9, the jail's super-maximum security wing, but it was quickly brought under control. Five inmates — four charged with murder and one charged with armed robbery — suffered injuries, including puncture wounds, and were taken to area hosptials, the sheriff's office says.

The hospitalized inmates are listed in serious to critical condition, but their injuries don't appear to be life threatening, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Several weapons were confiscated from the fight, and investigators are trying to find out how they got in to the prison, the sheriff's office says.

No guards or jail staff were injured, and the super-max area has been secured, according to the sheriff's office.
