50 MPH Winds, Blowing Snow Possible As Cold Front Hits Illinois

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday for the Chicago area.

ILLINOIS — Blowing snow and hazardous travel conditions are possible Wednesday morning, as a winter weather advisory has been issued for most of the Chicago area.

The winter weather advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday for portions of northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds will gust as high as 45 to 50 mph on Wednesday morning into midafternoon as a strong cold front moves through the area, the weather service said. There will also be scattered bursts of snow, which could create slick road conditions and poor visibility when combined with the wind.

The strong winds could also make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles, especially on north-south roads such as Interstate 39, I-55 and I-57, the weather service said.

According to the weather service, wind chills will also drop below zero by daybreak on Wednesday. The high for the day is 24 degrees, with temperatures falling to a low of 1 degree on Wednesday night.
