Accused Bank Robber Discovers Hopping A Bus Isn't Best Way To Make A Getaway

The suspect was arrested on a CTA bus Monday after he allegedly robbed a bank in the Loop.

CHICAGO, IL — Public transportation might be the sensible choice for the bank robber on a budget who also appreciates the potential environmental benefits of leaving the car parked at home.

But taking the bus isn't necessarily the sensible choice for the bank robber who wants to make a fast getaway from Johnny Law after pulling a big heist. There's a reason Steve McQueen takes off in a 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 — and not the no. 10 bus on the Get Out of Town Express route — after his bank job in "The Getaway."

That's what a suspect accused of robbing a bank in the Loop on Monday discovered after he was arrested on a CTA bus about an hour after the robbery and nearly 10 miles from the financial institution.

According to the FBI, a man in his mid-40s robbed First American Bank, 33 W. Monroe St., at about 2:10 p.m. Monday, March 20, the Chicago Tribune reports. The suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash by hopping a bus, the report added.

But the authorities were able to track the suspect thanks to an electronic device concealed in the stolen bank funds, the report stated. The man eventually was arrested on a bus in the 6400 block of South Halsted Street in the Englewood neighborhood, the report added.
