American Airlines Plane Blows 2 Tires At O'Hare, Latest In String Of Incidents

CHICAGO — An American Airlines flight blew two tires while taxiing for departure at O'Hare International Airport Wednesday, the latest in a string of aircraft tire incidents at the airport this month.

American Airlines Flight 3280 was bound for Charlotte when the crew reported two blown tires while taxiing for departure at about 2:30 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

American said the aircraft had pushed back from the gate when the tire problem was discovered.

Video from the airfield showed Chicago Fire Department personnel responding to the aircraft as passengers deplaned using stairs and boarded a bus. No injuries were reported.

American said passengers were returned safely to the terminal and placed on a replacement aircraft bound for Charlotte.

"We never want to disrupt our customers' travel plans and we apologize for the inconvenience this caused," American said in a statement to ABC7.

Latest In String Of Tire Incidents

Wednesday's problem was the fifth involving blown aircraft tires at Chicago's major airports this month and the fourth at O'Hare. None of the incidents resulted in reported injuries.

The incidents have involved American, United and Southwest aircraft during landing, takeoff or preparation for departure.

ABC7 reported that the Chicago Department of Aviation has been working with the FAA and airlines to examine the recent incidents. No common explanation has been publicly identified.

The latest incident comes less than two weeks after a United Airlines flight bound for Phoenix sustained tire damage during takeoff at O'Hare.

Patch reported Aug. 13 that United Flight 455, a Boeing 737-900, ended its takeoff roll after experiencing the tire problem. Passengers later deplaned on a taxiway, and no injuries were reported.

2 Planes Had Tire Trouble Hours Apart

Another pair of incidents occurred Aug. 17.

American Airlines Flight 386 reported two blown tires after landing safely at O'Hare at about 2 p.m., according to the FAA. The Boeing 737-800 had arrived from New York's LaGuardia Airport.

Passengers deplaned using stairs and were bused to the terminal. The FAA said it would investigate.

Hours later, another aircraft also sustained tire damage while landing at O'Hare, according to ABC7.

Recent Aircraft Incidents At O'Hare

The recent string follows another American Airlines tire incident earlier this year.

An American flight from Miami landed safely at O'Hare with two flat tires May 12. American Flight 791, a Boeing 737, landed after crew members reported a flat main landing gear tire. Passengers were later bused to the terminal, according to the FAA.

Wednesday's incident remains the latest in the series, and aviation officials have not publicly identified a shared cause for the recent tire problems.
