CHICAGO, IL — McDonald's is bringing back a fan favorite just in time for America's 250th birthday: the Fried Apple Pie.
While baked apple pie is a main staple on the McDonald's menu, the classic fried apple pie made its debut on the chain's menu in the 1960's. It started as a family recipe of East Tennessee Owner/Operator Litton Cochran and became a local fan favorite, then eventually a McDonald's classic.
"There are certain things that just take you back – and the Fried Apple Pie is one of them. It's something that people love and remember from growing up." said Eric Cochran, McDonald's Owner/Operator. "When Ray Kroc was trying to come up with a dessert for McDonald's, my Grandad, Litton Cochran, suggested a Fried Apple Pie as a classic that people would love. My Grandmom, Jo Cochran, spent months perfecting the recipe. Bringing the Fried Apple Pie back for fans this summer to celebrate America's 250th just feels right."
Starting June 23, the OG Fried Apple Pie will be back at participating restaurants nationwide for a limited time.
To really ring in the celebration, McDonald's is also plopping a 35-foot Fried Apple Pie right on Route 66 in Joliet at 920 N. Broadway St. Fans are invited to snap a selfie and pick up a souvenir map before they hit the road again.
McDonald's will be throwing a celebration from 3:30 to 6 p.m. on June 23 at the Largest Fried Apple Pie. Guests will enjoy live music, an ice-cold Coca-Cola and complimentary Arch Cards.
Fried apple pies will remain on the menu through July 4.
