There are plenty of places to grab a slice, but Illinoisans who truly appreciate pizza may want to check out two pizzerias in Chicago that recently earned some national bragging rights.
Illinois pizzerias named among the best in the United States in the 50 Top Pizza USA 2026 ranking are:
Robert's Pizza and Dough Co., 465 N. McClurg Court, tied for eighth place in the ranking. Led by husband-and-wife team Robert Garvey and Dana Hokin, the bi-level pizzeria in Streeterville specializes in handcrafted thin-crust artisan pizza made with fresh local ingredients.
Coda Di Volpe, 3335 N. Southport Ave., came in 43th place in the country. The Southport restaurant makes "excellent traditional Neopolitan pizza, made according to the European brand standards, that is, soft and with the right wood-fired oven crust," the ranking said.
The list ranked Una Pizza Napoletana in New York City as the No. 1 pizzeria in the country. Pizzeria Sei in Los Angeles and Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco tied at No. 2, followed by Razza in Jersey City, New Jersey, at No. 3 and Truly Pizza in Dana Point, California, at No. 4.
The 50 Top Pizza guides are based on the reports of anonymous inspectors who evaluate the best pizza restaurants in the U.S. and around the world.
Rankings are based on the pizzeria as a whole — not just the pizza or the chef. Inspectors consider the quality and digestibility of the pizza, service, cleanliness, atmosphere, how the wait is handled, and the wine, beer and beverage program.
