CHICAGO — A man helped himself to some new clothes and a slice of cake when he spent the night at Chicago's downtown Macy's, police said.
Roy Pughsley, 53, is charged with burglary and felony retail theft, the Cook County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday, after security footage captured him in the store past closing and caught him leaving with merchandise in the early morning hours.
Employees at the store's State Street location contacted the sheriff's police organized retail crime investigators on June 28 to report the overnight theft, according to the sheriff's office, which shared footage of Pughsley browsing clothing and wandering one of the store's restaurant kitchens holding a slice of layer cake. He left — with unpaid merchandise in tow — around 3:25 a.m., police said.
The store contacted investigators again on Aug. 3 after Pughsley was seen outside Macy's, and he was taken into custody, according to the sheriff's office.
