CHICAGO, Illinois, September 21, 2026 – When it comes to facing the unknown, Chicago adults are more anxious than the national average. Fifty-three percent of Chicago residents say uncertainty brings them anxiety, above the national figure of 50%.
These are among the local findings from Northwestern Mutual's 2026 Planning & Progress Study, the company's proprietary research series that explores Americans' attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs toward money, financial decision-making, and the broader issues impacting long-term financial security.
Chicago reports above-average anxiety rate among surveyed markets
Chicago's emotional response to uncertainty is marked not only by anxiety but by fear and frustration as well: 30% of Chicago adults say uncertainty brings them fear and 26% say it brings frustration, both above the national averages of 27% and 25%, respectively.
By contrast, just 17% of Chicago adults say uncertainty brings them excitement, below the national rate of 18% and well below the levels seen in cities like Los Angeles (27%).
"When more than half of Chicago adults say uncertainty makes them anxious, it tells us people are carrying a real emotional weight around their financial decisions," said Joe Smith, wealth management advisor at Catalyst Planning Partners. "A financial plan won't make the world less unpredictable, but it gives people something concrete to hold onto. When you know what you're working toward and you have a plan to get there, anxiety starts to give way to confidence."
Chicago adults report becoming more risk-averse amid uncertainty, a more cautious mindset
Chicago's emotional unease is reflected in its financial behavior. Over the past 12 months, 45% of Chicago adults say they have become more risk-averse – above the national average of 43%. Over the past three years, 41% say they have grown more cautious, in line with the 41% national average.
Chicago adults' approach to new investment trends largely mirrors the national average. Eight percent describe themselves as first movers, matching the national rate, while 20% say they generally avoid new investment trends and stick with what they know, in line with 20% nationally. However, just 14% say they don't invest at all, below the 18% national average.
That caution extends to careers: 68% of Chicago adults say they prefer the consistency and stability of staying with one employer rather than taking the risk of moving around, above the national figure of 67%. Just 32% say they would risk a career change for greater potential, below the 33% national average.
"What stands out about Chicago is that people are cautious in the near term but steady over the long haul," said Joe Smith, wealth management advisor at Catalyst Planning Partners. "They've grown more risk-averse over the past year, and they value career stability, but they're also more likely to be investing than the national average. That combination tells me people aren't retreating from their financial futures. They just want to approach them carefully. A good plan honors both instincts: it protects what you've built and keeps you moving toward your goals."
