Off-Duty Cop Shoots Pedestrian Twice, Fires At Group After Altercation: Police

Another male with the group suffered an arm injury, police said.

CHICAGO — An off-duty Chicago police officer discharged his gun repeatedly Sunday, shooting a male who had struck him in the face and firing at a group of pedestrians on the city's southwest side, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m., when the officer was driving in the 2600 block of West 24th Street, police said. He stopped and talked with a group standing on the sidewalk, and a male with the group approached his vehicle, physically engaging with and striking the officer, according to police. The officer then discharged his gun at the male, hitting him twice, police said.

The male was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition and placed in police custody, according to authorities. Another male with the group suffered an arm injury and later went to Mount Sinai in good condition, police said.

Following the first shooting, the officer drove a short distance down the street, stopped his vehicle, exited and fired shots at the group, according to police, who said the officer was taken to a hospital for injuries he suffered during the altercation with the male.

The officer will be put on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days, police said.

The incident is being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, according to authorities.
