You open a letter about your vehicle's insurance and find a warning about your license plates. You believe you have coverage, but the letter mentions a date from weeks ago. There is a reference number, a deadline and a website you may never have heard of.
What does it mean, and where do you start?
At Insured ASAP, our team currently handles more than 190 ILIVS inquiries per week. Many of the people contacting us simply do not understand what the system is or what their notice requires.
Those conversations are why we offer free assistance. We believe Illinois drivers should have someone who can explain the process, even when they are not buying insurance from us.
ILIVS stands for the Illinois Insurance Verification System. It supports the Illinois Secretary of State's electronic checks of vehicle liability insurance. It is not an insurance company or a separate type of coverage drivers need to purchase. Our guide explaining what ILIVS is covers the system, notices, reference numbers and common questions.
According to the Illinois Secretary of State's mandatory insurance guidance, vehicle liability coverage is checked electronically at least twice a year. When coverage cannot be verified after the initial and follow-up checks, the registered owner receives a letter requesting proof of insurance for the original verification date.
The important distinction is that the state may be asking whether your vehicle was insured on a particular date, not just whether you have insurance today.
Receiving a notice does not automatically mean you were uninsured. Start by checking the verification date, vehicle information and response deadline.
If your vehicle was insured on the date in question, contact the insurance company or agent responsible for that coverage. Provide the reference number from the notice so the applicable insurance information can be reported electronically. If you have changed companies, the insurer that covered your vehicle on the earlier date may need to respond. A policy purchased today does not establish that you had coverage then.
Not everyone contacting us has the notice in hand. Sometimes it has been misplaced. Other drivers have the letter but need help understanding the next step.
Our ILIVS Assistance Hub provides free, personal help with missing reference numbers, confusing notices, possible VIN or policy-information mismatches, and finding the official state payment link.
For reference-number assistance, have your license plate number or vehicle identification number, commonly called a VIN, available. We verify registered ownership or authorization before sharing case information. Please provide those details privately and not in public comments.
Our goal is straightforward: help you understand the issue and who needs to take the next step.
You do not have to switch insurance companies or become an Insured ASAP customer to receive help. Reference-number assistance, notice explanations and payment guidance are free.
Any required state reinstatement fee is separate. You pay it directly to the state; our agency does not collect or remit that payment. We provide the official link and help you understand the available steps.
Whatever your situation, do not ignore the response deadline. If your plates are already suspended, no one may drive the vehicle while that suspension remains in effect. Paying a fee is not a substitute for confirming that the required steps are complete and the registration has been cleared.
Chicago residents and drivers throughout Illinois can call or text 708-233-4848, or email ilivs@insuredasap.com. Our assistance hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central.
Insured ASAP is an independent insurance agency, not a government office or the operator of the state's ILIVS website. Our Illinois agents have been registered to use ILIVS since 2021.
You do not need to understand every term on the notice before reaching out. Bring your questions, and we will help you understand where to begin.
