The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce Unveils “Project Windows” Display
Featuring the work of local artists Shannon Kay Lewis & Kathleen Hinkel

The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce (ACC) is thrilled to unveil a magical window display at 5706 N. Clark St. by Andersonville-based artists Shannon Kay Lewis and Kathleen Hinkel as part of the Art Institute of Chicago’s citywide Project Windows contest. This year’s contest celebrates the Art Institute’s exhibition, Gustave Caillebotte: Painting His World, running from June 29 – October 5, 2025.
Titled “Andersonville; Rainy Day,” Lewis and Hinkel’s reimagining of Caillebotte’s famous painting "Paris Street: Rainy Day” reflects Andersonville’s Swedish roots and vibrant LGBTQIA+ community, echoing the painting’s original unconventional spirit. Preserving its composition, the piece swaps muted tones for vivid color, featuring local architecture and familiar faces. Hinkel’s photography merges with Lewis’ mixed-media collage to bring the classic into today.
Artist Shannon Kay Lewis comments, “This project was a true collaboration between myself, photographer Kathleen Hinkel and the fine folks at the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce. We wanted to reimagine this Caillebotte piece in our neighborhood with the personality of our neighbors. The original artwork was influenced heavily by Gustav’s affinity for photography, so it felt only fitting to combine Kathleen’s photography with my painting in this way.”
Launched in 2012 as a way for Chicago retailers to leverage the Art Institute’s world-class exhibitions, Project Windowshas developed into a celebration of art and creativity, inspiring participants across the city to craft beautiful, inspired, traffic-stopping displays and tap into Chicago’s cultural energy.
