Artist Suing NRA For Using 'The Bean' In Video

Artist Anish Kapoor, who created Cloud Gate, a.k.a. 'The Bean', is not happy that it was used in an NRA video last year.

CHICAGO, IL — The artist who created the Cloud Gate sculpture, a.k.a. 'The Bean" in Chicago's Millennium Park, is suing the National Rifle Association over its use of the art in a video last year. Anish Kapoor, who lives and works in London, claims the NRA infringed on his art's copyright by using an image of it in a video advertisement titled, "The Clenched Fist of Truth."

In a joint media release with the nonprofit Everytown for Gun Safety, Kapoor said his art has been "appropriated by the NRA to perpetuate its hateful ideology."

"...I have been overwhelmed and moved by the support of so many people who, like me, are appalled by the NRA’s divisive and hate-filled campaign against the democratic and humane values of the people of America,” Kapoor said in a statement. “In light of this solidarity and support I am encouraged to confront this organization and hold it to account for its blatant copyright infringement.”

Kapoor has asked the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois to order the NRA to remove the image of Cloud Gate from the video and award damages for using it.

Patch reached out to the NRA for comment, but the group did not respond by deadline.
