Best Companies To Work For: Illinois Businesses On Fortune's List

More than 20 companies with Illinois locations — and several headquartered in Illinois — snagged spots on the list.

CHICAGO, IL — From all-expense-paid trips to enormous bonuses, great perks and benefits, these companies are the best to work for in the United States. Fortune just released its 2018 list of 100 Best Companies To Work For, and several Illinois-based companies snagged a spot, along with more than a dozen companies with Illinois locations.

This time around, the state's highest-ranking employer is Chicag0-based Hyatt Hotels, which came in at No. 9 nationwide, up from No. 32 a year ago. The company — owned by the billionaire Pritzker family — "puts a higher-than-usual emphasis on senior leadership communication efforts, with digital and in-person channels that stress principles like authenticity, transparency and vulnerability," according to Fortune. The company also offers generous bonuses and unique benefits such as honoring original hire dates for employees who leave and are later re-hired by Hyatt. As of this month, Hyatt has 700 job openings, according to Fortune.

Next on the list for Illinois is Crowe Horwath, a professional services company based in Chicago. Coming in at No. 62, the company is making its debut on the list this year despite being founded in 1942. The corporation gives employees a sense of "personal ownership," according to Fortune, and it has a relaxed dress code along with allowing 90 percent of staff to work remotely at least some of the time. Employees also get 96 paid hours of volunteer work per year. Crowe Horwath currently has more than 300 job openings.

Also making its debut on the Fortune list this year is biotechnology and pharmaceuticals company AbbVie, coming in at No. 97. Founded in 2013, the company offers "uplifting" work that "changes peoples' lives," according to Fortune. As of this month, the company has close to 800 job openings, according to AbbVie.

Methodology

To be considered for the list, a company has to have at least 1000 employees, according to Fortune. The list measured companies in the U.S. on characteristics like innovation and people-focused programs. Fortune scores each company on an analysis of anonymous employee responses to a survey along with an evaluation of company programs and practices. You can read more about Fortune’s methodology here.

Fortune said it received feedback from more than 315,000 employees to determine the winners.Here’s the top 10 companies on the list:
