
Join School District 214, Ala Carte Entertainment, Finn McCool's Irish Sports Pub, Moretti's Ristorante & Pizzeria, and the Chicago White Sox for A Night Remembering Orlando Rivas on Tuesday, July 21, from 6–9 p.m. at Finn McCool's in Wheeling.
This special community gathering honors the life, service, and extraordinary heroism of Buffalo Grove High School security guard Orlando Rivas, who tragically lost his life while protecting students as they crossed the street after school. His selfless actions and unwavering commitment to the safety of others left a lasting impact on students, colleagues, friends, and the entire community.
The evening begins with opening remarks from ESPN's David Kaplan and Chicago White Sox legend Ron Kittle, followed by a $20 community buffet. Kaplan and Kittle will reflect on Orlando's connection to the White Sox organization and his family's longtime relationship with the team, including Orlando's father, Roy Rivas, who served as a White Sox chef for four decades. The program continues with heartfelt tributes from Buffalo Grove High School Principal Jeff Wardle, District 214 representatives, family members, students, and friends who will share memories of Orlando's kindness, dedication, and lasting influence.
Event Schedule
6–7 p.m. | Opening Comments and Buffet
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a welcome from ESPN’s David Kaplan and White Sox legend Ron Kittle. A $20 buffet will be available from 6–7 p.m.
During this time, Kaplan and Kittle will share remarks and discuss Ron’s history with the Rivas family. Orlando’s father, Roy Rivas, served as a chef for the Chicago White Sox for 40 years. Orlando also worked for the White Sox, and Ron Kittle knew both Orlando and Roy personally.
7–7:30 p.m. | Reflections on Orlando Rivas
At 7 p.m., the program will shift to a time of reflection on Orlando’s life and the meaningful impact he had on Buffalo Grove High School and the greater community.
Opening comments will be shared by Jeff Wardle, Principal of Buffalo Grove High School, followed by School District 214 Community. Students, family members, and others who knew Orlando may also speak and share stories about his life, his character, and his commitment to helping keep others safe.
7:30–8 p.m. | Raffle Hosted by David Kaplan
David Kaplan will host a raffle featuring a variety of prizes, including White Sox tickets, autographed items from past and present players, dining certificates, hotel stays, and additional gifts from the community.
8–9 p.m. | Live Music by Replay
The evening will continue with live music from The Replay Band, a Chicago-area acoustic classic rock group with a strong following throughout the northwest suburbs.
The Replay Band features Mike on lead vocals and guitar and Sharon on flute and percussion. Known for covers from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, the band brings a unique sound to its performances, highlighted by Sharon’s flute.
Orlando loved music from the ’60s and ’70s, making this a fitting way to celebrate his life and the memories he leaves behind.
