What would you give for a chance to be the most omnipotent version of yourself? To finally be rid of the petty human desires that keep you from achieving greatness? To finally have it all, everything you’ve ever wanted? What would you trade? What are you willing to lose? What would you do for power? These questions are at the core of KiNG MALA’s debut album, And You Who Drowned in the Grief of a Golden Thing. Across its wide-ranging 12 tracks – which seesaw between invigorating industrial pop and delicately refined R&amp;B balladry – the singer-songwriter spins a tale as equally rooted in a sci-fi nightmare as it is in reality.
“That's what I think storytelling is for,” says KiNG MALA. “It’s a vehicle to say everything you want to say – but a plot and characters makes it so exciting. You go with them to discover what you need to discover.”
As KiNG MALA came to learn, And You Who Drowned in the Grief of a Golden Thing calls into question her own battle for power – and how far is too far to get it. Or, perhaps more importantly, if she had it all along. With the help of producer Dan Loumpouridis, she dissects such an idea through layers of metaphor, creating a rich sonic trifle with each bite more delectable than the last.
From the moment KiNG MALA started working on her debut album in December 2023, she knew she wanted it to be conceptually driven. “Let's do a week of sessions where we're just talking about what this album is and not trying to make music, I want it to mean something to me,’” she recalls telling Loumpouridis. His way of tapping into meaning was to pose the question that informed the entirety of her debut: “What are you interrogating?”
Growing up in El Paso, Texas, the artist born Areli Castro was homeschooled with “zero access to the internet” or social media until her late teens. Even moving to L.A. didn’t offer immediate connection, with KiNG MALA saying it took a couple of years to figure out what she wanted to be. KiNG MALA first formed as an alternative band in which she played bass – and then she met songwriter-producer Rob Auerbach. The two made her debut solo EP together, during which KiNG MALA realized, “I want to make pop.”
Breakout success came with 2022 single “cult leader,” which established KiNG MALA as a new and undeniable voice taking up space in the dark-pop realm. “I felt like I had been trying for a while to recreate that energy [of ‘cult leader’], but I had been attacking it from this angle of anger and retaliation,” says KiNG MALA. “I felt like my petty emotion, my reactiveness, my rage, was getting in the way of this person I wanted to be: this great powerful woman… I was finally like, ‘Oh, it's a possession story. It's a power struggle.”
And You Who Drowned in the Grief of a Golden Thing tells that story in all its gruesome glory – but, true to form, it’s done via two non-descript, fictionalized characters: a human and an entity. Following the classic storyline of a hero’s journey to redemption, the front half of the album is packed with the wonder of “what if.” What would an exchange for power look like? And more importantly, what would it sound like? (Think the experimental, living aesthetic of Bon Iver’s 22, A Million or Dijon';s Absolutely, she offers – but with more bite.)

Long regarded the area’s premier destination for weddings, events, business travel and family getaways, the 218-key resort now offers an elevated guest experience in a serene, nature-forward setting.&nbsp;A picturesque escape situated on 88 acres of forest preserve tucked within the heart of Oak Brook just 30 minutes outside of downtown Chicago, the hotel offers a serene lakeside retreat for major milestones like weddings and large celebrations to local staycations, business stays and the like. Designed and architected by DLR Group, with engineering by Grumman Butkus and general contracting by Elements of Hospitality, the&nbsp;renovation was managed by the Davidson Hospitality Group Design and Construction team. 
The project's completion introduces fully redesigned guestrooms that seamlessly blend the property’s rich architectural heritage with fresh, elevated touchpoints to meet the needs of the modern traveler. Original hardwood floors have been preserved, grounding each space in history, while new finishes, layered textures and residential-inspired furnishings create an&nbsp;inviting and modern aesthetic. Accent mural panels featuring abstract treescapes, along with a soft green palette drawn from the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the resort's strong connection to its lush natural backdrop. Guestroom updates also include refinished original case goods, plush seating, sculptural lighting and refreshed bathrooms designed with soft neutral tones and thoughtfully integrated lighting to evoke a spa-like sense of calm. Corridor spaces have also been fully upgraded, featuring modern LED accent lighting integrated into built-in soffits, creating a cohesive visual journey from arrival to guestroom. Together, these enhancements deliver a seamless blend of comfort, design and tranquility throughout the property. Inspired by the natural beauty of the surrounding brooks and wooded trails, the completed transformation reflects a design philosophy centered on renewal rather than reinvention. Originally built as a corporate training campus, the property’s Prairie-style roots and 1980s architecture have been thoughtfully preserved and reinterpreted, resulting in a cohesive environment where heritage and modern hospitality coexist.

A centerpiece of the new park, the Extreme Aerial Course is designed to make an elevated adventure more approachable for kids and first-time participants. Because the fully enclosed course does not require guests to be fitted into harnesses or clipped into overhead lines, families can move through the experience more easily while still enjoying the excitement and challenge of navigating obstacles high above the ground. 
Big Air Bolingbrook is also designed to make a family day out enjoyable for parents. While kids explore the park, adults can settle into a comfortable seating area, enjoy food and coffee from Big Eats and keep an eye on the action from a dedicated parents’ lounge anchored by a nearly 10-foot-wide by 8-foot-tall TV wall. 

Big Eats will feature an all-halal menu, allowing families, birthday parties, teams and community groups to order from the same kitchen and share a meal together. The café-style menu will go beyond traditional trampoline park snacks, offering families more options to sit down, recharge and stay a while. 

Leading the new Bolingbrook location are Founder Waqar Ali Khan and Co-Founder Mustajab Khan, who bring extensive experience building, scaling and operating businesses across multiple industries. Waqar has spent his career developing service enterprises from the ground up into multimillion-dollar operations that employ thousands and serve countless clients, earning a reputation for strong leadership and turning ambitious ideas into successful businesses. Mustajab brings a background spanning venture capital, data science and startup growth, with experience helping companies scale across healthcare, logistics, hospitality and tourism. Together, they are bringing that business expertise to Big Air with a shared focus on operational excellence, guest experience and creating lasting value for families throughout Chicagoland. 

Big Air Bolingbrook will also provide a lively destination for celebrations and group gatherings, including birthday parties, family reunions, school and youth group visits, team outings and corporate events. The park will feature four newly designed private party rooms with karaoke, created to accommodate everything from toddler birthdays and teen celebrations to adult group events. Guests will also have access to food and refreshments from Big Eats, which features a diverse menu with Halal options, along with customizable group experiences designed to make hosting easier.

Gold Coast Sounds Good Choir

Chicagoland's largest no-audition choral program for adults "55 and better" has nine choirs throughout Chicago and the suburbs, including the Gold Coast. Conducted by Jonathan Miller, the choir rehearses and performs at the beautiful, historic Fourth Presbyterian Church on Chicago's Magnificent Mile, 126 E. Chestnut Ave. Three sessions a year are offered -- two 15-week sessions in the fall and spring, and one 8-week session in the summer). All sessions include: a weekly 90-minute rehearsal with an additional (optional) online Friday rehearsal; guidance and instruction by professional conductors and accompanists; licensed sheet music; accessible rehearsal and performance venues; and free, public performances by each choir. Registered singers are also free to rehearse and perform with as many of the nine choirs as they wish for just one registration fee per session. Scholarships are readily available -- call the Sounds Good office at 630.395.9542 to apply. Sounds Good Choir also offers the only choir in Illinois for adults with early-stage dementia and their care partners. The Good Memories program is specifically designed to provide a safe, welcoming community in which to sing, socialize, and have fun.
